Ennerdale Wilderness Adventure Activities

The Ennerdale Valley is located in the north western corner of the Lake District National Park and is one of England's remotest, quietest and least inhabited valleys.
It also contains some of England's most vibrant natural environments and is home to “Wild Ennerdale”, one of the longest running wild land restoration projects in the UK.

Courses are usually based at Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre.  Depending upon the itinerary, accommodation will be a mix of camping and indoor accommodation.  There will also be opportunities for students to experience wild camping within the valley.

What is the duration of the Challenge?

Course duration is between 3 – 5 days.  In addition to gaining valuable life skills, students will learn about local history, its natural environment, geography, land management, and natural farming techniques.

During the programme students have opportunities to participate in outdoor adventure activities and conservation projects such as;

Ennerdale Wilderness Adventure Activities

  • Climbing
  • Abseiling
  • Canoeing
  • Raft building
  • Hiking and camping.
  • Gorge Scrambling

Conservation Projects

  • Tree Planting
  • Conifer clearance
  • Butterfly monitoring
  • Woodland survey

Students will also get to meet the wild Galloway cattle, learn about how they live as a herd and gain an understanding as to their importance in the conservation of the Ennerdale valley.

These projects are all real and on-going work - students will not only be contributing towards the preservation of this beautiful valley, they will also be assisting and supporting on-going research programmes.  Some of these projects can involve photography and report writing.
